SG caught the penultimate show of the Black Lips’ West Coat run last Friday night at the Music Box in Hollyweird. Live, the flower-punk garage band from Georgia have built a solid reputation for their on stage antics, which in the past have involved nudity, chickens, vomiting, and urination. However, it was all business as the quartet powered through tracks mostly culled from their solid new Mark Ronson-produced full-length, Arabia Mountain.

The gloriously wild behavior quotient was mostly provided by the crowd – about 33% of which instantaneously surged into a heaving mosh the moment Black Lips took to the stage. There was barely a moment when someone wasn’t riding the persperation -and-beer-soaked fleshy throng. As one surfer ended his or her roll, another would take a flying leap of faith from the stage with utter abandon.

Though the Lips’ aren’t a band to be bound by convention, their fast and furious set was topped off by an obligatory encore. During this adjunct, the band’s friends took to the stage to diligently TP the Lips lads, who showed their professionalism as renegades by barely missing a note or a beat.

When the lights came up, the majority of the moist, and at this point pungent, mass dispersed almost as quickly as it had formed, while Cole Alexander, who’d jumped from the stage to the theater floor, hugged it out and posed for photos with the die-hards that remained.
