Fellow distinguished SG members and readers, I have some most excellent news. In a bodacious turn of events, it seems the totally awesome Bill S. Preston Esq. and Ted Theodore Logan (a.k.a. Bill and Ted) will be coming back to a future on a big screen near you – with the aid of their time-traveling phone booth. (No way! Way!!!)

Bill and Ted’s third, as yet unnamed, adventure is totally being written by original screenplay writing dudes Chris Matheson and Ed Solomon. In an interview for MTV, Keanu Reeves (Ted) said they were like six weeks away from a draft (that’s if they don’t share Bill and Ted’s homework ethic and totally slack). Reeves also totally talked about the film’s most excellent plot:

“When we last got together, part of it was that Bill and Ted were supposed to have written the song that saved the world, and it hasn’t happened,” he said. “So they’ve now become kind of possessed by trying to do that. Then there’s an element of time and they have to go back.”

The song the actor dude is talking about is by Bill and Ted’s band the Wyld Stallyns, who totally don’t suck (not) and whose lyrical philosophizing serves as the basis for our utterly awesome future Utopian society.

In the first film, Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure (1989), the band (and therefore our future) is put in total peril when Ted’s downer of a dad threatens to split the high school friends up if they flunk history. Fortunately for them – and us – Rufus, a goodly guardian from the future (played by the late George Carlin), comes back to help Bill and Ted ace history, which they do with a little help from Napoleon, Billy the Kid, Joan of Arc, Genghis Khan, Sigmund Freud, Beethoven (the composer, not the dog), Abraham Lincoln, and father of thinking, So-crates.

In the follow up, Bill & Ted’s Bogus Journey (1991), the success of Wyld Stallyns and our future is again put in jeopardy, this time by a couple of Terminator-style Bill and Ted look-alike automatons and some super gnarly dude called Death, who also goes by the mega unfortunate name The Grim Reaper (whoooa!). After pulling a Melvin on Death, which like totally fails to perturb him, Bill and Ted ultimately prevail by kicking the scythe-wielding Duke of Spook’s ass at Battelships, Clue, and Twister. Having dispensed with their evil dickweed selves, the genuine metalheads are then free to fulfill their destiny at the Fourth Annual San Dimas Battle of the Bands, which totally puts them and the universe back on course.

However, between the end of that film and now, something has totally gone awry. According to the franchise’s canon, the Wyld Stallyns were already supposed to have written the most excellent song that will like go on to save our collective asses.

Fortuitously, as Alex Winter (Bill) recently revealed, the writing dudes have totally hit on an outstanding scheme (behold, much kudos!) to get around this apparent time paradox and get the Wyld Stallyns and the world back on a rockin’ and righteous track:

“Now the cat’s out of the bag, and the truth is that, yeah, we have finally hit upon an idea that we think is pretty great,” said Winters to MTV’s Adam Rosenberg.

“We’ve been working on it for the past couple of years, honing that idea and getting it into shape,” he continued.

Though there’s no word yet on when the film will like likely go into production, a most atypical website has just gone totally live (ish) promising that “in time…everything will be alright” and that Bill and Ted 3 will be “coming soon.”

So while we await the hopefully totally awesome third coming of Bill and Ted, keep in mind the righteous duo’s most just and joyous commandments: “Be excellent to each other, and party on dudes.”

Meanwhile, those in need of an interim fix of bodaciousness may enjoy this trailer for a totally bogus project called Bill and Ted’s Excellent Inception.

Later dudes and dudettes.
